Does anyone know whether varying the maximum processor state has any effect on game play performance?

Yes, altering the maximum processor state may boost your gaming performance in general. The default is 100 which allows for full operational capacity of your CPU core. If you reduce it, in order to save on the temperature, rest assured that your game performance may succumb. It is advisable to play around with settings between 90 and 100 to arrive at the desirable range that does not hurt game quality too much.
