What exactly is a stock and in what manner does it show ownership in a business enterprise?

Could someone please elucidate as to what a stock is and how it represents the fraction of ownership of a firm?

A stock is basically a certificate of ownership in a particular firm. When thinking of a firm as a pie, buying a stock means that you own a small slice of that pie. And as one more slice is taken out, the rest of the pie pieces which are left will be worth even more.
