What possible difficulties might arise when studying psilocybin?

There are two fundamental aspects to this research. The first one is historical and the second one is specific to the present scientific landscape. In brief, the first aspect is the older prohibition against psilocybin mushrooms, while the second is the social stigmas surrounding psychedelic research. Therefore, in answering why psilocybin has been the focus of limited research, the social landscape is a key element since it is a common explanatory variable.

Research on psilocybin has been quite a challenge because of drug laws that regulate it harshly. For that reason, there hasn’t been conducted a lot of research and studies that do exist are often small in size. Furthermore, typical psilocybin clinical trials are designed such that a therapist should be present throughout the experience followed by therapy sessions as well, making it very resource dependent. Still, these limits have changed recently, within the last decade or decade and a half which has encouraged researchers to start looking for the basic effects and the therapeutic potentials of psilocybin.

it's a shame that the war on drugs has poisoned so many minds and also bodies through all it's consequences.

Medlife Crisis did a great interview with David Nutt on the previous research and some of the recent developments on the therapeutics. Highly recommend it.

It's almost as if demonising something before fully understanding it is a bad move. I'm glad science is being given the room to move these days and is able to do this crucial research!

GREAT Topic well spoken to !   Thanks !                             Recently a doc (medlife crisis) did a "mind blowing" interview with a UK medical researcher in this field who had (sadly?) gotten bumped out of gov't work there for the crime of speaking truth to power.    He mentions a theory that the human mind's RAPID evolution may have been induced by our interactions with psilocybins.     B-)
