Two things that set HDDs and SSDs apart are the construction and the operation of these drives. HDDs are built with spinning plates and a read head making them prone to vibrations and relatively slow because of mechanical movements. SSDs on the contrary are built on flash memory with no rotating parts enabling faster access of data and better shock and vibration resistance.

SSD is better for everyday general use in my opinion since it's just faster and less wait time. Ever since I replaced my old HDD from my laptop with an SSD I can never go back to using an old hard drive. The same goes for gaming as well.

But in terms of long term external storage I still use HDD since speed isn't that important since you're just backing up files. Or if you're on a budget then HDD is still a viable option since it is cheaper.

HDD good for storage if it isn't under heavy R&W. SSD good for performance like OS.
BTW SSD SLC is best for R&W use but limited in capacity.
