Progressive overload is an important concept in strength training whereby a lifter increases the load, volume and/or frequency of movement over a period of time. This idea was also used by Milo of Croton, an ancient Olympic wrestler who would carry a calf on his shoulders such that as the calf grew, so did Milo’s strength. This is possible because it provides the required stimulus for muscles to grow in size and increase in strength with time.
